Cold Water Bass
I spent a little time on the water this week before all the rains started. Even though the water temps were right around the 40 degree mark, the approaching front was making the bass willing to bite.
They were grouped up in very small areas about 8-12 feet deep, in heavy brush. They would not chase your bait but when you got your bait down around them and fished it really slow, they would eat it.
When I found a spot that held some fish, I could catch several from a very small area.....an area about 1/2 the size of my boat, get out of that area and you would not get bit.
The largemouth and spotted bass was holding together in one area and the smallmouth bass were holding in a different area. Where I would catch smallmouth I would not catch largemouth or spots...and vice versa.
I probably caught 15 fish and here's a few pics of some of the bigger ones I got that day.
In the first few photos I had a friend take the pics from his boat. After he left, I would just hold them at arms length and take the photo myself before I released them.
This time of year you never know what kind of wildlife you might see. Here a couple shots of a very large hawk that landed in a tree close to where I was fishing.
We've had almost two days of steady rain since then so I'm sure it will be quite some time before I'll be able to get out again.
